Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) Development

At Surfleet Primary School, SMSC development is at the heart of school life and embedded throughout our curriculum.

Spiritual Development

Children are encouraged to reflect on their own beliefs, appreciate different faiths and develop a sense of awe and curiosity. Through Religious Education, visitors from faith communities and enquiry-based learning, children deepen their understanding of themselves and the world around them.

Moral Development

We help children develop a strong sense of right and wrong and make positive choices. Our values, behaviour expectations and safeguarding curriculum promote respect, responsibility, inclusion and understanding. Children also contribute to school life through opportunities such as the School Council.

Social Development

Children learn to work collaboratively, contribute to their community and value the views of others. Leadership roles, community events, assemblies, democratic elections and classroom discussions help children develop teamwork, communication and citizenship skills.

Cultural Development

We celebrate diversity and encourage children to appreciate different cultures, traditions and beliefs. Through our curriculum, enrichment activities and experiences, children gain a broader understanding of the world and their place within it.

Through these experiences, we nurture thoughtful, compassionate and responsible young people who are ready to make a positive contribution to society.
