Mathematics

At Surfleet Primary School, we aim to develop confident, capable and enthusiastic mathematicians. Through our carefully sequenced curriculum, children build fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills while developing resilience and confidence.

White Rose Maths supports our delivery of the national curriculum for maths.  A range of enriching resources help children revisit and secure learning through daily retrieval activities. Mathematical concepts are taught using the Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract (CPA) approach, helping children develop a deep understanding of key concepts and apply their knowledge effectively.

Our goal is for every child to leave Surfleet Primary School with strong mathematical foundations and the skills needed for future learning and everyday life.

High-quality questioning is used in every maths lesson to check understanding, address misconceptions and deepen learning. Working Walls provide helpful models, scaffolds and examples to support children’s independence and confidence.

From Nursery to Year 6, children are encouraged to use and apply mathematical vocabulary accurately, explaining and justifying their thinking. This focus on mathematical communication helps children develop a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts and reasoning.
