Modern Foreign Languages

We believe that learning a modern foreign language broadens children’s horizons and develops an appreciation of different cultures. Through French, children gain valuable language skills and cultural understanding that help prepare them for life in a diverse and connected world.

French is taught throughout Key Stage 2 using the Language Angels programme, which develops listening, speaking, reading and writing skills through a carefully sequenced curriculum. Learning is organised into progressive units that build children’s vocabulary, phonics and grammar knowledge over time.

Our French curriculum encourages confidence, curiosity and resilience, helping children to communicate in another language while exploring the links between language and culture. Children regularly revisit previous learning, enabling them to develop increasing fluency and accuracy.

By the time they leave Surfleet Primary School, children have a foundation in French and are prepared to continue their language-learning journey at secondary school.
