Design & Technology

At Surfleet Primary School, our Design and Technology (DT) curriculum inspires children to think creatively, solve problems and bring ideas to life. Through designing, making and evaluating products, children develop practical skills, resilience and an understanding of how technology shapes the world around them.

Our carefully planned curriculum follows the National Curriculum and provides progressive learning across structures, mechanisms, electrical systems, textiles, and food and nutrition. Through real-life projects, children learn to generate ideas, develop designs, create products and evaluate their work, building confidence and technical knowledge along the way.

Food and nutrition are taught in every year group, helping children understand healthy lifestyles, balanced diets and sustainable food choices. Children also explore ingredients and dishes from different cultures while developing practical cooking skills.

In Early Years, children begin their DT journey through activities such as construction, model making and exploring healthy foods. These hands-on experiences encourage curiosity, creativity and problem-solving, providing strong foundations for future learning.
