Our School Council

Our children’s thoughts and opinions are really important to us. Because of this, we seek their views in many ways across the year. One way in which we empower the children to share their voice is through our school council.

Giving our children the opportunity to make their own decisions about their school through the school council significantly contributes to our children’s sense of belonging, not just to the school but also the wider community. Such empowerment is a key aspect of what it means to be a member of Surfleet Primary School.

Each September, the children are given the opportunity to nominate themselves and present to their friends the reasons why they should vote for them. Following the presentations, all children then vote for their own choice of school councillor. With at least two children being elected from each class, this ensures that we have a school council who are representative of our whole school.

The school councillors meet once a term with Mr Chipperfield to discuss aspects of school life that are important to them and their class. This ensures that the themes discussed and points raised are a true representation of what the whole school think. Following a meeting, any decisions made are fed back to the class or in an assembly led by the school councillors.
